Game: #14 Yorba Linda vs #15 Edison

#14 Yorba Linda pulls out a late game comeback down 17-7 going into the 4th quarter against #15 Edison high school in Huntington Beach at ‘Cap’ Sheue Field. A game that was a nail biter all the way until the last snap between the two heavyweight champs. A defensive game between both sides to start the game with every yard and down needing to be earned all the way through. Thanks to a three touchdown night by Isaiah Trujillo and a key stop on 4th down with less than a minute in the game, Yorba Linda was able to pull off a late comeback against a formidable foe.

The first half of the game was a classic show of smashmouth football with neither side able to break through each other’s defense. Multiple attempts on 4th down and an interception through much of the first half. Late in the second quarter, on Yorba Linda’s third drive of the night, the Mustangs would convert a few fourth down conversions along with a roughing the passer call would put them within the red-zone for the first time in the game, the first time for either side. A 6-yard run by Isaiah Trujillo would cap off the gritty drive with a touchdown and the first points on the board. On the ensuing kick-off though, Blaise Burwell would take a return 98 yards to the house to quickly even up the game. It would be 7-7 going into halftime.

Mustangs would receive the kick-off to start the second half, but stopped on their initial drive. With Edison getting the ball on a short punt near midfield, they would pound the ball on a few downs before attempting a long throw on the outside perimeter to Ayden Degiacomo for a 30 yard completion to put them in striking distance of the endzone. Sam Thomson would complete a pass to Sam Edmisten on an outside screen to the endzone to take the lead 14-7. Mustangs would attempt to respond by driving down the field, but stopped in their own territory. They would be stopped on 4th and 3 to give the ball back to the Chargers. A 25 yard field by Crue Bradshaw would end the drive bringing the lead to 17-7 going into the 4th quarter.

A massive jet sweep play would set up Yorba Linda inside Edison territory on their first drive of the fourth quarter, before a 1 yard TD run by Trujillo would give the Mustangs a chance to mount a late game comeback down 17-14. Edison would be stopped on multiple run plays attempting to kill game clock time before punting away to give the Mustangs a shot at taking the lead. Troy Roberts would grab a long 45 yard reception to get back into the red-zone for Yorba Linda. Trujillo would take it to the endzone from 4 yards out for his third touchdown of the evening to give the Mustangs the lead 21-17. Edison would get the ball back with two minutes left on the clock in a two-minute drill situation to bring it close to Yorba Linda’s end of the field. A big reception by Edmisten would’ve put the Chargers at the 1 yard line, but a holding penalty brought the ball back. With less than 15 seconds on the clock, one last shot for Edison on 4th and 5 yards, Thomson’s pass would be deflected at the line of scrimmage by Blake Thorp to force a turnover on downs to complete the comeback for the Mustangs.

Yorba Linda with the big win advanced to 2-0 early in the season and look to add another win on the road next Thursday against San Jacinto. Edison will host Lakewood high school next week to bounce back into the win column.
