GAME RECAP: Knight, Iamaleava Power UCLA Past Purdue 52-38 as Bruins Open Big Ten Play Unbeaten

PASADENA, CA — Big Ten play opened under the lights at the Rose Bowl, and the Bruins did not wait around to make a statement. UCLA stayed unbeaten in 2026, rolling past Purdue 52-38 on Saturday night to move to 3-0 and 1-0 in conference in Bob Chesney’s first season in Westwood.

It was a track meet from the jump. Nico Iamaleava found Semaj Morgan for a 20-yard score just over three minutes in, and the Bruins were on the board. Purdue answered immediately. Ryan Browne dropped one over the top to Xavier Townsend, and Townsend took it 75 yards to the house. Just like that, it was 7-7.

UCLA did not blink. Iamaleava hit Morgan again, this time from 27 yards, and Wayne Knight finished a drive from 6 yards out. After one quarter the Bruins had punched in three touchdowns and led 21-7.

Purdue spent the second quarter climbing back into it. Fame Ijeboi punched in a 2-yard run, then Browne and Townsend connected again from 20 yards out to knot it at 21-21. UCLA needed an answer before the break and got one from Mateen Bhaghani, who drilled a 34-yard field goal with four seconds left to send the Bruins into the locker room up 24-21.

The third quarter flipped twice. Browne found George Burhenn for a 30-yard strike, and Purdue had its first lead of the night at 28-24. That lasted all of two and a half minutes. Anthony Woods ripped off a 16-yard touchdown run, Knight added another from 7 yards, and UCLA was back in front 38-28. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano cut it to 38-31 with a 27-yard field goal, but the Bruins had the ball and the momentum heading into the fourth.

Jaivian Thomas opened the final period with a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 45-31. Ijeboi answered with a 1-yard plunge to keep Purdue within a score at 45-38, but Iamaleava put it away with a 6-yard toss to Landon Ellis with 7:45 left. From there the Bruins chewed clock and let a defense that forced three turnovers finish the job.

UCLA’s identity showed up in the run game. The Bruins piled up 369 rushing yards on 48 carries and four rushing touchdowns. Knight was the headliner, going 18-for-177 with two scores and a long of 47. Woods added 80 yards and a touchdown. Thomas had 58 and a score. Iamaleava chipped in 55 yards on the ground and was clean through the air: 19-of-31 for 276 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Morgan finished with four catches for 72 yards and two scores. Brian Rowe Jr. added 65 yards on two grabs, including a 43-yarder.

Purdue could throw it. Browne went 19-of-30 for 378 yards and three touchdowns, and the Boilermakers finished with 425 passing yards. Townsend was the problem all night, hauling in six balls for 162 yards and two scores. Asaad Waseem had eight catches for 149 yards. The issue was everything else. Purdue managed just 63 rushing yards, lost two fumbles and threw an interception. Ijeboi still found the end zone twice, but the Boilermakers never could slow UCLA’s front.

Sammy Omosigho led the Bruins with 12 tackles and two sacks. Jalen Woods added nine stops. Sahir West recovered both Purdue fumbles, and Rodrick Pleasant picked off Browne and returned it 12 yards. Those takeaways were the difference in a game that finished 645 yards of offense for UCLA to 488 for Purdue.

Final: UCLA 52, Purdue 38

The Bruins stay unbeaten and take the first step in Big Ten play. Purdue drops to 1-2 and 0-1 in conference. UCLA heads on the road next Saturday to Maryland.
