GAME RECAP: Minter blocks Field Goal, as Chargers win Thriller at Home

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA- In a thrilling Friday night showdown at Cap Sheue Field, the Edison Chargers clashed with the Newport Harbor Sailors in an exciting bout of Sunset League Football during Week 8 of the CIFSS Regular Season.

The night began with Newport Harbor’s young gun, Sophomore Quarterback Jaden O’Neal, connecting with Cade Fegel for an early touchdown, giving the Sailors a 7-0 lead. The momentum continued in the first quarter as O’Neal executed a quick QB sneak, extending their lead to 14-0.

However, the Chargers fought back in the second quarter. Mason York took over as Quarterback, orchestrating a comeback. He handed off to Jared Schnoor for a touchdown and later connected with freshman Quarterback Sam Thomson, who marked his first Varsity High School career touchdown pass, tying the game at 14 heading into halftime.

Edison burst into the 3rd quarter with Julius Gillick showcasing his impressive running skills, scoring a 66-yard rushing touchdown and putting the Chargers ahead 21-14. The game remained a seesaw battle as Newport Harbor responded with a passing touchdown from O’Neal to Jordan Anderson, tying the game again at 21.

In the 4th quarter, Newport Harbor retook the lead, going up 28-21, but Edison showed resilience. Sam Thomson connected with Mason York for another touchdown, knotting the score at 28. With determination, the Chargers seized the opportunity to pull ahead as Nico Bammer kicked a field goal, making it 31-28.

Newport Harbor attempted a comeback, and Jagger Blauwkamp’s crucial reception put them in field goal range. However, Edison’s Jake Minter blocked Newport Harbor’s Jon Anderson’s field goal attempt, sealing the game in favor of the Chargers, 31-28.

Edison’s next challenge takes them to Orange Coast College for the Battle of the Bell against the Fountain Valley Barons, while Newport Harbor returns home to Davidson Field to face the Corona Del Mar Sea Kings in the Battle of the Bay next Friday night at 7 pm.
