NEWPORT BEACH, CA- On a cloudy night, the excitement of Sunset League football returned to Davidson Field in Newport Beach, CA, where the Newport Harbor Sailors clashed with the Huntington Beach Oilers to kick off the league.
The Sailors wasted no time making their mark, with senior running back Jagger Blauwkamp blazing down the field for an impressive 62-yard rushing touchdown within the game’s first 15 seconds.
Brady Edmunds and the Oilers responded swiftly, as Edmunds connected with Tyler Young for a wide-open 55-yard passing touchdown.
Newport Harbor wasn’t to be outdone, as Blauwkamp caught a touchdown pass from Jaden O’Neal, putting the Sailors ahead 14-7.
The Sailors continued their onslaught in the 1st quarter, with O’Neal finding Josiah Lamarque for a 31-yard passing touchdown, extending their lead to 21-7.
Huntington Beach fought back with a 61-yard passing touchdown from Edmunds to Hunter Gray, closing the gap to 21-14.
Newport Harbor remained relentless as O’Neal threw a 9-yard slant to Senior Wide Receiver Jordan Anderson, ending the 1st quarter with a 28-14 lead.
The Sailors dominated the 2nd quarter, with O’Neal connecting with Lamarque again for his 4th passing touchdown of the night, increasing their lead to 35-14.
O’Neal wasn’t finished, delivering his 5th passing touchdown of the night to Jordan Anderson, propelling Newport to a commanding 42-14 lead at halftime.
In the 2nd half, Newport Harbor introduced their second quarterback, Bode Stefano, who continued the onslaught with another touchdown pass to Jordan Anderson, who scored his 3rd receiving touchdown, making it 52-14.
The Oilers managed to score more points in the final minutes of the 4th quarter, with Zain Bhakta connecting with Micah Riola. However, they fell short in the league opener with a final score of 59-21.
Newport Harbor’s hot start in the Sunset League continues as they prepare to face the tough Los Alamitos Griffins at Boswell Field in Westminster, CA next Friday night.
Meanwhile, Huntington Beach looks to bounce back against the Edison Chargers in the Battle of Huntington Beach next Friday night at Cap Sheue Field at 7 pm.
