HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA- Under a serene and breezy Friday night sky, the gridiron action roared back to life at Cap Sheue Field as the Edison Chargers hosted the San Clemente Tritons in a highly anticipated clash.
The Tritons wasted no time making their presence felt on defense, as Riley Kelley intercepted a pass from Edison’s Savelio Niumata early in the game. However, San Clemente couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, and Edison regained possession.
The Chargers’ standout, Mason York, the former JPWest Media Player of the Year, showcased his skills once again. He hauled in an impressive 80-yard pass from Niumata, putting the Chargers on the board with a 7-0 lead.
As the game entered the second quarter, San Clemente found their rhythm. Senior Aidan Rubin’s impressive run set the stage for Puka Fuimaono’s touchdown, allowing the Tritons to head into halftime tied at 7-7 with the Chargers.
The second half, however, belonged to San Clemente. Max Gonzales nailed a 27-yard field goal, giving the Tritons the lead. The Chargers’ woes deepened as Matai Tagoa’l’s fumble recovery provided San Clemente with another opportunity, one that Aidan Rubin capitalized on with a 9-yard rushing touchdown, extending the Tritons’ lead to 10 points.
Entering the fourth quarter, San Clemente kept the momentum going with a pivotal 45-yard rushing touchdown. Tritons’ quarterback, Dylan Mills, connected with Cole Herlean on a 16-yard pass to seal the deal for San Clemente, securing a commanding 31-7 victory over the Edison Chargers.
For Edison, non-league play concludes as they travel to Bakersfield College to face Wilcox of Santa Clara at 7 pm on Friday. Meanwhile, San Clemente remains undefeated, improving to 5-0 and continuing their remarkable season.
