RANKINGS: Santa Margarita Holds No. 1, San Juan Hills Jumps 4 and Notre Dame Debuts in the JPWest Media Week 7 CIFSS Top 25

League play is two weeks old and the JPWest Media CIF-SS Top 25 already has a new shape. Santa Margarita is still the team to beat. Bosco and Sierra Canyon did nothing to lose their spots. Everybody from No. 7 down had to earn the line they are on.

The statement

Santa Margarita (6-0) beat Mater Dei 14-7 and did not move. That is the point. The Eagles did not need style points. They needed the Monarchs, and they got them. Seven sacks, a defense that never broke, and a second straight year of owning that matchup. Servite comes to Saddleback on Friday. Another Trinity Friday, another chance for someone to say the top spot is soft. Nobody has yet.

St. John Bosco (5-1) handled JSerra 40-14 and stays at No. 2. Sierra Canyon (6-0) blanked Loyola 41-0 and stays at No. 3. Mater Dei (4-2) drops the game and holds at No. 4. A 14-7 loss to the No. 1 team, on the road in league, is not a fall. The Monarchs still own the hardest schedule in the section. They get JSerra on Friday.

Centennial (3-3) stays at No. 5 after a 65-14 win over Vista Murrieta. The record is ugly. The roster is not. Orange Lutheran (4-2) stays at No. 6 after putting 56 on Servite. That win is why the Lancers did not drop after the Sierra Canyon loss two weeks ago, and why Friday at Bosco is a top-10 game and not a mercy spot.

Climbers

Mission Viejo (5-1) moves to No. 7 after a 42-14 win over Edison. San Clemente (6-0) moves to No. 8 after a 28-0 win over Yorba Linda. Both were waiting on the team above them to lose. JSerra lost. That is the whole move.

Corona del Mar (6-0) is the cleanest rise on the board, up three to No. 12 after a 24-10 win at Villa Park. Undefeated, in league, and done beating up on the team that was No. 20 a week ago. Tustin is next, at Newport Harbor.

San Juan Hills jumps four spots to No. 14 after a 61-10 win over Los Alamitos. Bishop Amat moves to No. 15 after a 27-26 escape at Serra, a field goal at the end and a win the Lancers had to have. Crean Lutheran, Dana Hills, Capistrano Valley and Inglewood all take a step up. None of those are arguments. They won.

The drop

JSerra falls two spots to No. 9. A 40-14 loss at Bosco will do that. The Lions are still a top-10 team because Friday is Mater Dei, not because the Bosco tape was close.

Huntington Beach is the real fall, down four to No. 16. The Oilers are 6-0. They also needed a 24-21 win over El Modena to stay that way, and the teams that passed them won bigger. Undefeated is not the same as unchallenged. Friday at Dana Hills is two ranked teams in the Delta League. Lose that and No. 16 will look high.

Servite stays at No. 10 after a 56-21 loss to Orange Lutheran. The record is 3-3. The schedule is why they are still here. Santa Margarita on Friday is the last week that excuse works without a result.

New on the board

Chaparral (3-3) comes in at No. 19 after a 52-14 win over Murrieta Valley. The Pumas are 1-0 in the Big West and playing the same league as Centennial. That is a résumé, not a courtesy rank.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (6-0) debuts at No. 22 after a 28-21 win over Chaminade. San Jacinto (6-0) debuts at No. 24 after a 49-0 win over Temescal Canyon. Chaminade (5-1) stays, barely, down three to No. 25. The Eagles lost to a team that was not ranked. They do not get to stay at No. 22 after that.

Off the board

Yorba Linda, Villa Park and Tustin. Yorba Linda is out after the forfeits. Villa Park lost to Corona del Mar. Tustin lost to Crean Lutheran 21-7. All three are on the bubble. None of them are in the 25.
