LOS ANGELES – USC linebacker Eric Gentry has been named the Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week following his standout performance in the Trojans’ 33-17 victory at Purdue on Saturday (Sept. 13).

Gentry, one of the nation’s most dominant and unique linebackers, turned in a career-best performance with 8 solo tackles, 3 tackles for loss (19 yards), 2 sacks (11 yards), and 2 forced fumbles. Each of those categories marked single-game career highs for the veteran linebacker. His disruptive presence consistently broke down Purdue’s offensive rhythm and limited the Boilermakers’ ground game, forcing them into passing situations.

The recognition comes as part of a strong start to the season for Gentry, who has quickly re-established himself as a key defensive leader for the Trojans. His ability to impact multiple phases of the game has been instrumental in USC’s early-season success and Big Ten transition.

The Bednarik Award, given annually to the nation’s College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995, is named in honor of NFL Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik. Known as one of the last true “60-minute men” for his excellence on both offense and defense with the Philadelphia Eagles, Bednarik represents toughness, leadership, and elite play—qualities recognized in this weekly honor.

Semifinalists for the 2025 Bednarik Award will be announced on Nov. 11, with finalists unveiled on Nov. 25. The winner of the 31st Bednarik Award will be announced on Dec. 11 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show, with the formal presentation set for March 13, 2026 at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in Atlanta.
