Game: #3 Mission Viejo vs Folsom

Mission Viejo walked over the Bulldogs in a California showcase which the Diablos dominated with a 53-12 win and handed the Bulldogs their worst defeat since 2006. In a game that had a ton of noise coming into the week, a solid Norcal vs Socal matchup, one team would showcase the grit of Southern California football. Folsom and the highly rated BYU commit Ryder Lyons would visit Diablos stadium to steal a win against the powerhouse team in Orange County. Mission Viejo and the Ohio State commit Luke Fahey would come out the gates flying and never look back as both sides of the ball for the Diablos would dominate the majority of the game.

Mission Viejo would take the ball to start the game. On the first snap, Fahey would have trouble holding onto the ball before picking it up and making something out of nothing on a scramble. Two plays later, Fahey would find Luke Karby in the middle of the field who would take it into the endzone for the first points on the board for the Diablos. The Bulldogs first drive would end in a quick 3 and out to give Mission Viejo the ball back.

Throughout much of the first quarter, both sides would have trouble moving the ball, especially Folsom. Mission Viejo would score the next touchdown with a pass from Fahey to find KJ Woodbury Jr. With Mission Viejo’s top wideout and Miami commit Vance Spafford out for the game with an ankle injury, Mission Viejo’s offense would rely on a wideout core by committee with flashes of KJ Woodbury Jr showing off his talent for much of the game. Folsom’s first score would come off of a pass from Lyons to Rob Larson for about 20 yards to the endzone before the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would be dominated by Mission Viejo and would ultimately decide the game with Folsom unable to respond to the Diablo offense who would put up 23 points. Mission Viejo would feature a massive catch and run from Jack Junker, a Dallas Miller touchdown, another KJ Woodbury Jr touchdown reception, and a Davante Curtis touchdown run.

The story of the night would be the Mission Viejo defense who looked much like a Trinity League contender. Covering up Folsom’s receivers on man coverage, getting to Lyons in the pocket and forcing limited time on passing plays, forcing turnovers with interceptions, and earning two safeties in the Folsom endzone. Mission Viejo was decisive on defense, only allowing Folsom to put 12 points on the board and ultimately disrupting the Folsom offense.

Mission Viejo will prepare to take on a 3-0 Lincoln Hornets team on the road next week to remain undefeated on the season. Meanwhile Folsom travel back home to take Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. next week.
