MISSION VIEJO, CA- In a perfect setting for football last Saturday, the Saddleback Bobcats and the Grossmont Griffins clashed in a thrilling game down in El Cajon, CA. The Bobcats roared into action first as Quarterback Trey Kukuk orchestrated a 1-yard touchdown run, propelling them to an early 7-0 lead.
Grossmont, determined not to be outdone, retaliated with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Dylan Jackson, leveling the score at 7-7. Saddleback, however, swiftly responded as Trey Kukuk connected with Marques Carrillo Edgar for a touchdown, regaining the lead at 14-7 to close out the 1st quarter.
The Bobcats continued their momentum into the 2nd quarter, with Kukuk taking matters into his own hands once more, scoring a 4-yard rushing touchdown, extending their lead to 21-7. Saddleback’s dominance extended to all aspects of the game when their defensive end, Jackson Irwin, intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 25-yard pick-six, widening the gap to 28-7.
As the 2nd quarter neared its end, Saddleback opted to bring in quarterback Joey Gentilella, who expertly maneuvered the Bobcats into field goal range. Kian Afroomhteh nailed a 30-yard field goal, making it 31-7 at halftime.
The start of the 2nd half mirrored the first, with Saddleback’s kicker nailing a 42-yard field goal to push the lead to 34-7. They wasted no time increasing their lead further, as Ezekiel Peirce punched in a 1-yard run, making it 41-7.
Saddleback maintained their momentum into the 3rd quarter, with sophomore quarterback Joey Gentillela tossing his first college career touchdown, a 9-yard pass to Rocco Hahn. Later, running back Chase Christner added another 7 points, stretching their lead to 55-7.
Although Grossmont attempted a comeback, it was too little too late. Saddleback emerged victorious 62-21, marking their 5th consecutive win the most since 2019, when they started the season 9-0. Next up, they face the number 1 team in California at Riverside City on Saturday at 12pm. The Bobcats are on fire and look to continue their impressive run.
